Morrigan, the raven goddess, is one of the important figures of Celtic Mythology. Her name means “The Great Queen”. Morrigan is the goddess of war, death, sovereignty and prophecy. She is mostly represented as a raven. Morrigan is also sometimes considered a triple goddess.
Morrigan’s earliest narrative appearances are in the Ulster Cycle stories. (There are four great cycles in Irish Mythology, which are about heroic legends.) It is said that she offered her love to the hero Cúchulainn but when he did not recognize her and rejected her, she told him that she would hinder him in battle. When Cúchulainn died in battle, she lands on his shoulder in the form of a crow.
Morrigan can also be compared to the Germanic Valkyries. In an old English poem called Exodus, ravens are represented as the choosers of slain.
